Introduction to risk
A lot the time, people either think about risk incorrectly or not at all.
Why we should start thinking differently about risk now - change is accelerating, new exposures through interconnectivity, evolved and novel hazards, evolved and new vulnerabilities, complex multi-risk environment, speed, scope, scale, simultaneity
When thinking about risk, a good starting point is acknowledging that it is not a singular, static thing.
Any risk is a changing interaction of at least 4 elements] : a hazard, an exposure, a vulnerability and a response.
What is a risk made of?
Exposure is about who or what is in harm's way. It describes the people, property, systems, or other things that could be affected by a hazard. For example, a coastal city is exposed to the risk of flooding due to its location.
Vulnerability refers to the susceptibility to be harmed when exposed to hazards. It's about how prepared or capable a community, system, or asset is to withstand the effects of a hazard. This can depend on various factors, including socio-economic conditions, geography, age, and the level of preparedness.
A hazard is the potential threat that could cause harm or damage. This might be a natural event like a hurricane, earthquake, or flood, or a human-made event such as a chemical spill, cyber-attack, or war.
Why should you know this?
